This English lyric is a translation of the 1979 Cantonese song 狮子山下, composed by Joseph Koo (顾嘉煇) with lyrics by Jim Wong (黄霑). The song was written as the theme for an RTHK television show and was performed by Roman Tam (罗文).
During the 2003 SARS outbreak in Hong Kong, Chunjiro was based in the city and often heard the song being played to lift public morale. Since then, it has become closely associated with fortitude in times of despair.
When crafting the English lyric, Chunjiro aims to preserve the original lyricist’s or composer’s intent as closely as possible, while also attending to rhythm and rhyme.
This lyric is singable to the original melody.
Our life is filled with joy
And with joy, there’ll be tears too
We shall all meet below the grit of Lion Rock
Where laughs we raise and sighs we subdue
Life’s road is uneven
Many a worry, we put aside
And as we stride together across Lion Rock
We drop our ego, self-pride
Conflicts, we have to leave behind
Chase dreams, we, you and me
Together in the same boat
We sail on fearlessly
Now you see the horizon
It’s a straight and simple line
Let us work hard, persevere, and with dignity
Forever our names we will sign
