Beyond the Seas and Skies 海阔天空
海阔天空 by the Hong Kong rock band Beyond is an immensely popular song — an iconic anthem of Cantonese rock music — and arguably the band’s most recognisable signature piece.
In this English rendition, the lyrics have been meticulously reworked to convey what was likely in the mind of the original songwriter. Line by line, the English lyrics seek to remain faithful to the Cantonese original, preserving both meaning and emotional intent.
When crafting the English lyric, particular attention was given to rhyme and rhythm. For example, in the chorus, “rhythm” was deliberately chosen to rhyme with “freedom”, while still staying close to the original sense of the lyric.
