This English lyric is a translation of the 1942 Chinese song 恨不相逢未嫁时爱我, composed by 姚敏 with lyrics by 陈歌辛. The song was first released during the heyday of old Shanghai, by China-born Japanese singer 李香兰, also known as Yoshiko Yamaguchi (山口淑子).
The song title itself 恨不相逢未嫁時 was actually a phrase taken from an ancient Chinese poem of the Tang Dynasty. The poet 张籍 wrote about unrequited love.
